Gravel cycling in the mountains

Discover the gravel roads in Tänndalen and Funäsfjällen

Gravel cycling in the mountains is something very special. In Tänndalen and Funäsfjällen, miles upon miles of fine gravel roads await you through mountain forests, along lakes and high up on bare mountains. Here you can roll leisurely through valleys or embark on longer adventures – like the classic ride over Flatruet, Sweden's highest road.

Funäsfjällen is one of Sweden's best areas for gravel cycling. There is a large network of gravel roads and mountain paths that connect the villages of Tänndalen, Funäsdalen, Bruksvallarna and Ramundberget. The roads wind through mountain birch forests, along water and up into open mountain expanses where the views stretch for miles.

The beauty of gravel cycling here is the variety. One moment you're rolling along quiet mountain lakes and rippling streams, the next the road is climbing up towards the bare mountain where the landscape opens up and the horizon feels endless.

Many tours can start directly from accommodation in Tänndalen, making the area perfect for both shorter evening trips and longer day trips.

The old road in Tänndalen

One of the most popular gravel roads in Tänndalen is the Old Road, also known as Tänndalslänken. It winds along the Tännån River and Tänndalssjön Lake through mountain birch forests and open mountain landscapes. The road is easy to cycle on and is perfect for a leisurely gravel ride or as the start of a longer trip towards Funäsdalen.

The pace here is often leisurely. You might meet a fisherman by the water or a hiker heading towards the mountains, but there is rarely much traffic.

Flatruet – Sweden's highest road

For many gravel cyclists, Flatruet is one of the greatest experiences in the Funäsfjällen Mountains.

Here you will find Sweden's highest road, reaching a whopping 975 meters above sea level. The road runs between Mittådalen and Ljungdalen and takes you straight up to the bare mountain. Flatruet is a wide and relatively easy-to-cycle gravel road that runs across the mountain expanses. The landscape is open and magnificent, and the view stretches for miles.

Cycling here is something special. You pedal over the bare mountain with the mountains all around you and the sky as your closest neighbor.

For a really nice gravel ride, you can start in Tänndalen or Funäsdalen and cycle all the way up to Flatruet. This will give you a long and varied ride from valley to bare mountain.

Between Mittådalen and Ljungdalen you will find Sweden's highest road and for you as a true cyclist this cycle route over Flatruet should be on your bucket list. In the treeless land of Flatruet the reindeer are close. In addition to making the whole experience even more magnificent, it requires you as a cyclist to show consideration. The view is spectacular and from the gravel road there is a clear view of Helags. Helagsfjället reaches an impressive height of 1797 meters above sea level and is Sweden's highest peak south of the Arctic Circle. At Helags you can also find the country's southernmost glacier. The stretch from Funäsdalen to Mittådalen is absolutely not a transport route to reach the goal, but the stretch is both powerful and magnificent, with some nice undulating turns. Gravel cycling at its very best.

Tänndalslänken

Get between Fjällnäs and Funäsdalen in the most beautiful way possible. This tour lets you discover small, hidden gravel roads and old roads, plus you get beautiful mountain views

Length: 48 km
Difficulty: Blue
Starting point: Härjedalen Mountain Museum or Gamla Tullen in Fjällnäs.

Easy cycling tour that connects Fjällnäs with Funäsdalen, via Tänndalen and Hållan. You cycle on small gravel roads and old roads, mixed with asphalt. The tour contains a mixture of mountain views, shoreline cycling along Lake Malmagen and beautiful birch forests. You encounter the Tännån rapids where the water of the valley dances downhill towards Lake Tänndalssjön, a fantastic view of Lake Funäsdalssjön and the village of Funäsdalen with Anåfjället in the background when you start the tour in Fjällnäs. On the route there are several food and coffee places that are suitable for a short break, also beautiful places where a packed lunch is perfect. Don't miss Anderssjöåfallet or a swimming break at the shore of Lake Tänndalssjön. Don't miss turning off the county road at the signs so you can experience the beautiful stretches closest to nature. You can turn around and cycle the same distance back or arrange a ride to one end of the cycle path.

Nedalshytta

Cycle abroad and experience Norwegian fast asphalt and gravel roads with incredible views. Overnight stay at Nedalshytta for those who want to split the trip into two days.

Length: 195 km
Difficulty: Black
Starting point : Härjedalen Mountain Museum

Experience two countries on one and the same bike tour with gravel cycling in the most amazing mountain environment. This is the tour for those who like to cycle long distances without compromising on either the views or the experience. The number of mountain peaks in sight over 1,000 meters will be many even before you have crossed the Norwegian border. Eventually you will roll down towards the Norwegian Brekken and then turn left towards Stugudal. Towards Stugudal you cycle on the Norwegian equivalent of Flatruet and because the number of altitude meters is many, the chance for pure enjoyment is great. Our warmest recommendation is to make a detour towards Sylsjön to extend the tour and the time up in the high mountains, either before or after Nedalshytta. Here you will enjoy a good night's sleep at the mountain station if you choose to divide the tour over two days. The start and end of the tour is along Tänndalslänken and on the way back, this is where you might choose more easily rolled asphalt along road 84. You can also start and end the tour at Vauldalen Fjellhotell.
