The mountainside where it all began
The southern side of Hamrafjället, on the other side of Rörosvägen as seen from Ski Lodge, is the mountain side where it all began here in Tänndalen. When the first ski tourists found Tänndalen in the early 1900s, there were no slopes or lifts. Long wooden skis and leather ski boots were used to go both uphill and downhill. Then “Pinnen” – a legendary guide and ski instructor – came to Tänndalen and in 1951 the first slope with an associated chairlift opened on the south-facing slope of Hamrafjället. For various reasons, the Tänndalen ski area continued to grow on the current side of the valley. The first lift was dismantled and the slope has slowly grown again.
An idea emerges
The peak tour trend is growing like crazy. More and more people are discovering the charm of getting to the top on their own and then enjoying their well-deserved turns down. Training and fun in a wonderful combination. We, who are always thinking of new ideas, suddenly came up with the most obvious thing, to open Tänndalen's first ski area again! We give you skiing in its purest form, without lifts and lift queues, just like it once began.

But, you might be thinking now. The mountainside is already there. What have you actually done? Well, we'll tell you. Firstly, the forest has been carefully thinned out – just enough to make skiing enjoyable, just enough so that the trees can continue to collect the lovely loose snow. We have cleared both easy and tough trails to the top. We have developed and strengthened all the fun features that are already in the terrain – cliffs, jumps and chutes. We will keep an eye on the avalanche danger and take action if necessary, the area will be part of the ski patrol's area of responsibility. Our ambition is simply to create an area with fantastic free skiing in safe conditions. Both for those of you who have never tried the top tour thing and for those of you who have it all figured out. We think it will be as good as it gets.
